PRESCOTT - At its meeting on February 3, 2020, the Council of the Town of Prescott declared the real property located at 555 King Street West (commonly known as the Health Centre--front building only) as surplus to the needs of the Corporation of the Town of Prescott. Notice of the intended sale of this Surplus Property will be published in the local newspaper and posted on the town's website at www.prescott.ca.
Council made this decision due to a number of factors. An offer from the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville to purchase the property and utilize it for social services began this process. This sale would secure a permanent home for these vital services in Prescott and ensure that the Health Centre building was still serving a public need.
Health Centre usage and ongoing financial concerns were also issues. Few user groups at the Health Centre have resulted in a longstanding net operating loss of approximately $10,000 per year. In addition, continual building maintenance averages another $8,000 per year.
Pending infrastructure projects were considered as well. As part of the motion declaring this property surplus, council directed staff to allocate all proceeds from the sale to a dedicated reserve fund for a replacement of the municipal Water Tower, expected in the near future.
"Essentially, this sale is smart financial and infrastructure planning that will be a big help when it comes to trimming expenses and replacing the Water Tower," said Mayor Brett Todd. "And while the Health Centre has served the municipality well for some four decades, we can accommodate the limited number of current users elsewhere. This is an opportunity to turn an ongoing loss into significant infrastructure funding that also assists the delivery of social services in Prescott. So even though this is a tough decision, I believe it to be the right one."
