Local student mentoring program enters third year

Local student mentoring program enters third year

PRESCOTT - Girl Talk is a non-profit organization that provides a leadership opportunity for high school girls to mentor middle grade girls to help deal with the triumph and trials of the early teenage years. Part of their mission statement is "the bonds and lessons learned in Girl Talk meetings are something the girls will carry with them wherever they go in life". This program will be entering its third year this September.

Tammy Hache, a Girl Talk advisor, has felt a need to help young girls.

" If we start at a young age we can make a difference in their lives, their future." Hache states, explaining that the program exists to help girls build confidence and develop leadership skills through weekly peer-to-peer mentoring. "Our goal is to provide the necessary resources at no cost, for all girls during their most vulnerable years. Our hope is for Girl Talk to instill the values to help girls grow up to become kind confident leaders, who will treat each other with respect and make a difference in a girl's life."

Girl Talk's initial season started in March 2016. Weekly chapter meetings are held on Wednesday nights from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Seaway Christian Church in Prescott. They are facilitated by a high school Girl Talk leader.

"Students reaching students. Our goal is to help young teenage girls build self-esteem, develop leadership skills, and recognize the value of community service. We had a larger group of girls in our second season, and we are confident once we get the word out, we will see more girls come out," Hache added.

A typical Girl Talk meeting lasts one hour. The girls are between nine and 13 years of age approximately. Lesson content includes titles such as Being a Friend, Life Skills, Getting to Know You, and much more. The program also includes fun crafts and opportunities to help out in the community. This season will incorporate a plan for additional outings.

Registration is on Wednesday, September 12, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Seaway Christian Church on Churchill Road Prescott. The initial session will start on Wednesday, September 19.

Those interested in signing up for the upcoming season are asked to contact Tammy Hache at 613-803-3633.
